Question regarding HDMI Input into Sharp Aquos LCD TV and digital optical audio output to Onkyo HTS-5100 HTIB?

supahfly111 asked:

I have a Sharp Aquos LCD TV (Model LC52D85U) and an Onkyo HTS-5100 surround sound system. The receiver on the surround sound only has HDMI pass-through so it does not carry any audio to TV. Instead, I want to know if I can connect all my components directly to th TV with HDMI and then use the tv’s digital optical output to feed to the Onkyo receiver. My main question is, will the TVpass the digital audio information it receives from the components as is or will it filter the audio data into only what the TV itself can support and then pass only those formats through the optical out? I called Sharp and Best Buy and both have rocket scientists on the other end of the phone line that have no clue what I’m talking about. Any help would be greatly appreciate from some one experienced with the technology.

Thanks.
The receiver does not receive any audio through HDMI. It only passes through the video to TV. For example: If I have my playstation 3 hooked up directly to the receiver, I have to connect the HDMI for video and optical for audio otherwise I do not get any audio at all. This has been confirmed with Onkyo. The reason for my question is because the receiver only has two Optical inputs and I have more components to hook up that only have optical for digital input.

  • If your receiver supports HDMI pass-through, it should be able to decode the audio and pass-through video to the TV.

If you don’t want the receiver on all the time, connect the source to the TV via HDMI directly and connect the source’s optical out to the receiver. HDMI and analog audio or s/pdif work at the same time.

Whether a TV will pass-through Dolby digital audio received over HDMI to its optical output is model dependent. Some do, some don’t, so it is easier to simply connect the source’s optical directly and works all the time.

  • The digital audio output on the Sharp does not support digital audio received via HDMI. It only passes out digital audio from the ATSC tuner. I had my HD components all connected to the tv with HDMI and the optical output going to my receiver but only received analog signals. A phone call to Sharp customer support confirmed that this was not supported. Most other brands of tv work as you would expect and the digital output sends all digital information from any input source but not Sharp.(at least not on the D85U series)
