How Do I Watch My Hdtv With My Surround Sound System?

I have a LG hdtv and DVD with surround. I’ve just figured out how to connect my surround speakers so that the tv sound comes out of them when Im watching my normal tv which is on the AV1 channel, (by turning the dvd player onto TV-AUDIO using the auxillary button), but when I connect my HD cable and then put the tv on the HD channel(HDMI 1) the surround won’t come out of the speakers anymore.
Can this be helped?
