If you have a decent graphics card, you should have a DVI port on it. This is wider than the traditional D-Sub VGA. DVI to HDMI cables are available quite cheaply on eBay and are as good as the hideously expensive ones. Failing that, you will need a converter. But for the price, you may as well upgrade your video card. There are plenty of cheap nVidia 9-series cards around at the moment which will have a DVI port.

HDMI gives a signal that's superior to VGA. HDMI is digital throughout, and VGA is an analog connection, so there's a conversion happening from analog to digital at some point in the connection to the TV.
You can buy adapters (cables) that go from DVI to HDMI, and that's your best bet. If your video card doesn't have a DVI port, it's probably several years old (unless you have a laptop).
You're probably not their target market for a higher-end TV if you're looking to connect with an analog (VGA) connection.

If your computer is a desktop then buy a video card with an hdmi port.
If its a laptop you will need a vga to hdmi converter box.VGA is analog HDMI is digital.
When a TV has a VGA input the resolution is limited. And they have to add an analog to digital converter. Most people do not want limited resolution.
So saving the cost of adding that converter allows you to get HDMI at a lower cost.
But you can convert the signal at the cost of the unit and the cost of quality images.
